Today Research In Motion announced to developers that it has added tower-based location detection to its BlackBerry OS 5.x (or higher) development platforms, which means that applications will be able to get a quick, general location fix without resorting to on-board GPS use. The new functionality requires that the developers add support for it in their applications.

According to those at Fortune magazine’s Brainstorm conference, HP’s Jon Rubenstein, head of the company’s recently purchased Palm subsidiary, said that his company’s webOS 2.0 smartphone operating system was on track for “later this year” and that HP was still aggressively developing hardware.

In a statement provided to Reuters, Apple has said that its white iPhone 4 smartphone will not be available until later this year, and that it has proven itself “more challenging to manufacture” than expected. Apple did not provide any firm time line as to when the device would go on sale, nor did it say whether the delay was in any way related to the iPhone 4 Antennagate issue that has been dogging the company recently.
