Today Verizon Wireless announced that its V CAST Apps store front is now available on most BlackBerry smartphones. The software is currently available on the BlackBerry Bold 9650, the Storm 2 9550, the Curve 8530, and the Tour 9630. Verizon Wireless will roll out V CAST Apps to the Storm 9530 and Cure 8330 in the coming weeks.

Today Research In Motion announced to developers that it has added tower-based location detection to its BlackBerry OS 5.x (or higher) development platforms, which means that applications will be able to get a quick, general location fix without resorting to on-board GPS use. The new functionality requires that the developers add support for it in their applications.

Today Vodafone UK announced that it is now offering the BlackBerry Pearl 3G, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro, and the LG Optimus smartphones to its customers. The Sony Ericsson and LG models run on versions of the Android smartphone OS. All three devices are available free on contract.

Today Google rolled out an updated version of its Google Voice application for Android and BlackBerry smartphones that reduces the system’s reliance on data for placing calls. Voice now makes use of unique access phone numbers for each contact called so that it doesn’t have to query a Google server before actually dialing, speeding up the call initiation process.

MetroPCS today announced that its customers can now purchase the BlackBerry Curve 8530. The 8530 is one of RIM’s lightest and thinnest BlackBerry smartphones, and features WiFi, a 2.0 megapixel camera and camcorder, GPS, Bluetooth, and a full QWERTY keyboard.
