Microsoft Windows Phone 7 smartphones to offer only Bing search by default

In an interview with Pocket-Lint, Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan said that the upcoming Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform would use only Bing for search, due to its heavy integration. Sullivan added that other search providers should be able to offer search apps for WP7 phone in the future. This comes as no real surprise and is little different from what Google has done with Android.

Google increases dialing speed for Google Voice on Android and BlackBerry

Today Google rolled out an updated version of its Google Voice application for Android and BlackBerry smartphones that reduces the system’s reliance on data for placing calls. Voice now makes use of unique access phone numbers for each contact called so that it doesn’t have to query a Google server before actually dialing, speeding up the call initiation process.

Microsoft confirms WP7 initial hardware partners: ASUS, Dell, HTC, LG, Samsung

Exec: LG Display shortages may delay Apple iPad launches

The CEO of LG Display, the company that makes the display used in Apple’s iPad, has said that his company has been unable to keep up with demand for the large displays used in Apple’s new tablet, which sold over 3 million units last quarter. The executive said that Apple may have to “delay launches” of the device due to component shortages.

Rubenstein: Palm webOS 2.0 due “later this year”

According to those at Fortune magazine’s Brainstorm conference, HP’s Jon Rubenstein, head of the company’s recently purchased Palm subsidiary, said that his company’s webOS 2.0 smartphone operating system was on track for “later this year” and that HP was still aggressively developing hardware.

Failed KIN line cost Microsoft as much as $240 million

As part of its quarterly earnings report yesterday, Microsoft noted that the failed KIN line of phones added to its total cost of revenue. While not singled out as a line item, the KIN’s contribution to costs could be as high as $240 million.

Apple starts issuing iPhone 4 bumper case refunds

Based upon reports from users, it seems that Apple has started to issue automatic refunds to Apple iPhone 4 users that had recently purchased the company’s bumper case. Apple plans to make the bumper case available free to users through the end of September as part of its response to the iPhone 4 Antennagate issue, which I discussed in an editorial piece earlier this week.

Amazon sees $1 billion in mobile sales in last 12 months

Yesterday Amazon, as part of its Q2 2010 earnings report, announced that mobile devices, including Kindle e-book readers, accounted for over $1 billion in sales during the prior 12 months. CEO Jeff Bezos expressed his enthusiasm for the new wireless tablet category of products now hitting the market.
